650MHz Athlon computer overclocked to 800MHz

Updated 7 February 2000

In fall of 1999 I decided to build a computer based on an Athlon central processing unit (CPU) and an inexpensive Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) storage subsystem. This is one of the first computers I ever built. It seems a long time ago, now.

Before starting this project I decided to wait until a selection of Athlon mainboards was available and the prices of Athlon CPUs fell. In late December 1999 I was able to obtain at a reasonable cost a mainboard and a CPU that satisfied me.

I had the two basic components of my new computer: mainboard and CPU. Now I had to select, obtain, and assemble the other components in order to build a working computer. Here's how I did it.
